Volunteer Case Studies

Counsellor: I was delighted to be selected for training, though a little worried about whether I would be OK. Six years on, I am now thinking of training as a Supervisor. I have found the work tough at times, but thoroughly rewarding, seeing couples and individuals in deep distress or fear gradually coming through this. It has been an education for me, and a privilege” (Susan).

Marriage Preparation Provider: Having had an interest in marriage preparation, I did the training and started working with other colleagues from my local Centre. It is amazing to see young people (and some not so young!) come on our courses, perhaps with some trepidation or even reluctance, and find that they learn and grow, and find out how to build and develop their relationship - something that was missing for me when I married” (John).

FOCCUS Facilitator: “I had been a counsellor for Marriage Care for a number of years and became very interested when they decided to develop FOCCUS. Although I was qualified as a Marriage Care counsellor, I still had to do the training. It gave me a whole new set of experiences and knowledge. It was also different working with a couple who were stressed out because they were happy and thinking about their wedding, instead of those who had stress that comes from relationship problems!” (Jo).
